The 27 year old Ledaig 1996 has spent the last 7 weeks of maturation in a Chateau Margaux red wine barrel. The 27 years before that in a bourbon barrel. For those who don't know, Ledaig is the peated variety of the Tobermory distillery. The special thing, however, is that this Ledaig is not peated at all, but is distilled like a Ledaig with longer fermentation times, different middle-cut and reflux settings. Ripe pears fill the nose with stewed strawberries with Mars bar, peanut brittle and salty influences. Flavors of chocolate, butterscotch and spiced ginger flood the tongue, after which the full mouthfeel also provides a long finish with salty licorice and chocolate again. A very special whisky.
